Leavey Awards for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education One of the more important aspects of Freedoms Foundation’s Awards programs is the emphasis it puts on rewarding educators who teach the private enterprise system. It is essential to the future of our freedoms and our way of life that young people today – our future leaders – develop an understanding of and enthusiasm for this facet of the American system. It was this belief that led trustees of The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation to generously endow the Leavey Awards for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. This prestigious cash award of $7,500 is given to full time educators who have an innovative way of teaching America’s private enterprise system. A special award of $15,000 can be given for an unusually meritorious entry. Since the program’s inception in 1977, nearly $3 million have been distributed to educators in 45 states. Eligibility The candidate must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident employed full-time as an educator at an accredited American school (grades K-12), college or university. The application must conceive and implement and innovative course, program or project which develops, among students, a deeper understanding and appreciation of the American private enterprise system. The nominee’s program, course or project must be operating or initiated during the previous academic year. Preparing Your Nomination The attached nomination form must be accompanied by a portfolio (ring binder or photo album) containing a detailed, two-page synopsis outlining the content and results of the course or project and its relevance to the private enterprise system. The course or project must be adequately documented by comprehensive materials such as graphs, sample materials, photographs and letters of commendation. Videotapes and CD-ROMS are accepted but are rarely viewed. Freedoms Foundation reserves the right to reproduce submitted materials in Foundation publications. Deadline for Entries is October 1st Evaluation A special independent jury of leaders drawn from the economic, business and academic communities meets each October to evaluate nominations and select recipients of the Leavey Awards. Evaluation Criteria The special independent jury looks for the following in an entry... * Is the entry innovative both in terms of content and audience? * Does the entry contribute, in a meaningful way, to the advancement or understanding of the private enterprise system? * Do the activities of the project or program demonstrate to students the strength of the private enterprise system? * Were the intended results of the entry achieved? * Did it appear that the students gained new skills/knowledge?
